Hot Nude Yoga BLOG - Current NEWS

HNY news, stories, and great information on how to live a yogic lifestyle.

It is Friday night, and the air is frigid. Torrents of rainwater are finding the gutters, and the streets are sparse of New Yorkers. As I exit the subway near Herald Square I can see my destination two blocks down the street. The heavily veiled windows of the fourth floor studio create a sense of privacy, a comfortable environment for escape. I cross the street, and approach the front door of the building. As I reach out to press the respective buzzer a woman pushes her way in front of me to press her respective buzzer as well, the second floor. And there we waited. I never figured out who was buzzed in first, but the woman entered before me followed closely behind by her female companion. We ascend from the ground floor, spiraling upwards, three hands lightly grasping the weathered wooded railing. One flight, and on the second the women abruptly come to a halt. They have reached their destination, Chelsea Nails. It is filled with all sorts of women—old, young, beautiful, those wishing to be beautiful, all of them indulging in some “me-time”. With a clear path now ahead of me, I follow the always welcoming, yet simple paper sign at the bottom of the fourth flight; black text on a white piece of paper, stating “yoga this way”, with an upward arrow penciled in providing clarification. I reach the fourth floor, and make my way towards the plain, unmarked door immediately across from the stairs. As I approach, the door opens, as if I am expected. “You must have ran up those stairs quickly”, Mark commented as he appeared on the other side of the threshold. “Or maybe that was someone else I just buzzed in.” As I enter the studio, Mark greets me with a warm, prolonged hug.

The room in which we are standing is comfortable—lights dimmed, an aged wooden floor, exposed brickwork. It is a studio split into two sections with a dividing wall, one part being the yoga space, and the other a kind of small foyer. On one side of the room is a series of cubbies for belongings—jeans, shirts, belts, underwear, socks, and shoes, while the other side of the space includes a coat rack for articles requiring hanging. “So you’re probably wondering when to take your clothes off,” Mark says, immediately confronting the source of my anticipation. Mark must have taken notice of my lack of direction, and nervousness as I looked around the room. One thing in particular did catch my attention however, a small wooden statue of a naked man in a sitting pose with a massive erection. “Take your time. You are welcome to keep your clothes over here,” he pointed towards the cubbies, “and once you are undressed please make your way into the studio.” It is funny watching other students take off their clothes. Some do it quickly, while others take their time. Some will take off their shirt, then use the restroom, or take the extra time to fold it perfectly. These people will take off one article of clothing at a time as if it is an art. Others whip off their shirts, and then their pants in underwear in one fluid motion. They are then left in their socks, and remove them from their feet as if they are restricting their freedom. Students also act differently as they enter the studio space where the yogis set up their mats. Some will sit down on their mats, layback and close their eyes in meditation. Other students will sit upright, and stretch assessing the other students in the room, or engaging in brief conversation. These students will gaze around possibly making eye contact with others and smiling. This process can be important in knowing whom to pick as a partner later in the class, if the teacher suggests partner poses. There is really no one-way to begin a nude yoga class at Hot Nude Yoga. Setting my forest green yoga mat against the wall, I remove my jacket, hanging it up on one of the many available hangers. Mark has begun to greet a couple other students who have just buzzed in, and walked up the stairs. My heart is racing, and I feel like the world is going to come closer to the end as I get closer to full exposure. I hesitate for a while, but eventually take off a shoe—one down six more articles of clothing to go. Then another shoe, a couple socks, heart racing and my shirt is folded, placed on the shelf. I unbuckle my belt, proceeding to slide off my jeans and underwear in one fluid motion.

“Full nakedness! All my joys are due to thee, as souls unbodied, bodies unclothed must be, to taste whole joys.”
-John Donne

I feel uncomfortably exposed, yet liberated at the same time, mostly uncomfortably exposed however. The other students who arrived after me have begun to undress as well. I make eye contact with Mark, and he smiles. These people I have never met are seeing me completely naked, the purest form of myself. I have no shield to hide behind, and no form of expression but my own body and mind. All that is left is my yoga practice, a wonderful community, and I.

“Clothing is armor”, says Aaron, the founder of Hot Nude Yoga. “Yoga is about disseminating the ego. Doing yoga naked takes this process to a whole new level because our suffering stems from our relationship to our image of ourselves. When you remove a layer of that image, you just get closer to who you truly are.”

...........................

Aaron Star—former scuba instructor, and avid yogi since 1991—awaits the arrival of his students. His close friend is in the room with him, for support. Aaron is nervous. Today is the first class at his new studio, Hot Nude Yoga. He hears some students enter the space downstairs. His nerves have not subdued, and Aaron asks his friend to go downstairs to greet them. Aaron tries to collect himself, taking some deep breaths, in and out. He is already unclothed, and assumes Savasana, corpse pose, as he lies down on his mat. Aaron closes his eyes, keeping them closed as the new students come up the stairs, undress, and find places for their mats around the studio. Some time has passed, and Aaron finally opens his eyes, feeling collected. “As I sat up and turned around, to my deep and utter surprise, I saw that the room was filled with eighteen beautiful men. That moment will remain with me for a very long time.” His anxieties melted away as he began to teach his first class of many to come.

USE IT OR LOOSE IT

In the past couple of months, many people often ask me what I do to work out. And as I have discovered, many people either hate going to the gym, or have never developed the habit of going and become lost in on the path of health and physical fitness....
The studio at the Chelsea location was founded in 2001, and has grown more and more popular in the gay community ever since. Aaron didn’t come to New York City to open a nude yoga studio however. “I wanted to come to New York to teach yoga”, says Aaron, “and to start a yoga career, or business. I wanted to teach privately, and when I came to New York I realized I needed to create some other sources of revenue, and develop a client base.” He knew that yoga classes were a great way to do this, and everything fell into place in “a kind of progression”. First came the idea of yoga classes in a studio. Next, came the specific demographic the classes would be aimed towards—gay men. At this point, Aaron knew that he wanted to develop a series of classes that would appeal to gay men specifically. He also knew that nudity would be a way to approach this, as it was something different, that most other yoga studios do not offer.

However, the concept behind Hot Nude Yoga has developed into much more than a business venture. Aaron liked the idea of opening a studio directed specifically at men because he feels that celebration of masculinity is important, and that it has been sterilized in today’s world. This celebration of masculinity is not “in a sense of beating drums, and having fire rituals, but more in a sense of appreciation of the male archetype. Aaron feels that the connection between men, and other men has been present throughout history. And that it has modernly began to deteriorate. “Throughout history there has always been a celebration of masculinity. You know, through the games, or through sport, even war. There was always a camaraderie that happened between men, a deep familiarity that happens naturally, organically.” Now, the bonding between boys is even absent in the American school system. “You know, the boys would shower together with the boys. The YMCA even used to demand that people were naked when they swim because swimming wear was unhygienic. It was mandatory nudity. There is a lot of perversion that has happened in our culture,” says Aaron.

“Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then.”
-Katharine Hepburn

“It is this perversion that has taken away from the bonding experience between boys, who are now very isolated. Now, everything is very sterile, very proper.” Aaron is very negative about the absence of the community, and connection men used to share so frequently. He says, “The connection is there because we’re men, and intrinsically yearning for that connection. I don’t think it’s a sexual thing, maybe it’s a little bit of an erotic thing, but I think we have sterilized the camaraderie that used to exists in Ancient Times, and a little bit throughout the ages. That connection, that aspect, I think that men are craving for that connection, the connection to the masculine archetype to be nurtured even more.”

................................

I am alone on the other side of the divider in the yoga space as I roll out my yoga mat and lay down onto the floor in Savasana. This position is rejuvenating, and often used to begin, and end a yoga practice. My arms are away from my torso at a forty-five degree angle, palms up, and my legs slightly apart drifting over to either side. I can feel a release of tension from my shoulders, and hips as I sink into the wooden floorboards beneath my mat. Thoughts make their way in and out of consciousness. I think about the nail salon. Are they aware of the room filled with naked yogis two floors above? Why am I here? I’m naked? My penis is out there for the whole room to see, and I am not enjoying it. Savasana is meant to be relaxing, but at my first nude yoga class it was merely a way for me to become immersed in my wandering thoughts of nudity anxiety.

I hear the buzzer, and someone has arrived. After greeting Mark the man becomes visible through the space on the side of the room divider. He places his shirt on the shelf above my own clothes. He is shirtless, his toned yogi body glowing in the therapeutic lighting coming in through the curtained windows. He unbuckles his belt, and slips off his jeans and underwear placing both on the shelf. I am no longer in Savasana, but now sitting up on my mat. Not wanting to be obvious, I take a twist in his direction as if stretching, concurrently watching the man as he casually strolls towards me—mat under right arm, water bottle in hand. His body is toned, he is attractive, and seeing him naked sends my mind racing. Rolling out his mat on the floor next to me, the man arranges himself with his legs straight out in front, and begins to stretch. When someone walks into the room it is as if everyone notices, but doesn’t at the same time, a kind of passive noticing.

He moves as if clothed, confident with every aspect of his body: spreading his legs while reaching for opposite feet, laying flat in Savasana, and going through a couple flows—stand up, touch toes, hands on the ground, jump feet back, lower down to the ground with elbows at sides, keep legs on ground while pushing up through the arms, slide into downward dog keeping spine extended, jump feet forward, come up into a half-lift, bring the upper body into standing, and repeat. I watch him go through his flows. His body is beautiful, and I cannot help but admire him. It was clear that a lot of work had gone into sculpting each muscle to be aesthetically pleasing. Something I wouldn’t have noticed if he were clothed.

............................

“The only time nudity really becomes distracting is when somebody comes into the room that somebody or some people feel are really attractive. But I think it would still be distracting even if they were clothed”, says Aaron. “When I am in a clothed class, or a naked class, and someone attractive walks in, someone hot, or good-looking, it is distracting for me, but I just make it a part of my practice.” The classes are very sensual, as yoga in general is very sensual. “I don’t believe that most people think about the naked people in the room the whole time, or themselves being naked. I think it’s an issue for about thirty seconds, maybe a little longer, and then it’s completely forgotten,” comments Aaron.

Flowing from pose to pose, feeling the slightest movement in the fingertip, the smallest twitch of a muscle. Yoga trains the mind to pay attention to these often-unnoticed details, and is very interested in raising energy in the body. But when nudity is a factor, how is the line drawn between what is sensual and sexual? For a red-haired New Yorker whose name is undisclosed, “sensuality exists when there is an awareness of the body, and an appreciation of its movements and its existence within space.” This exists between two people when both, “are aware of one another and are sensitive to their shared physical presence.” In her opinion, the experience turns sexual when, “there is an attitude of invitation present. Its sexual when one or more parties view it in a context that turns to more of an erotic focus.” She further related this to the concept of nude yoga stating, “I think nude yoga can be sensual if that is the shared attitude, but once you get someone in the group who views the experience as one to make sexually stimulating connections, the entire dynamic shifts.”

.................................

Waiting for Mark to begin class the two of us wait. I am stretching as he is finishing his flows. A few other men enter the space are setting up their mats wherever there is room. It is at this moment that my anxiety begins to rise again. Eyes are wandering, and I feel a clear sexual tension in the room. The man next to me, who I had been watching, is looking at me and I turn to face him. Our eyes meet. His smile is warm, and melts my anxiety away. He initiates conversation, and we casually speak, looking each other in the eyes. His name is Mike, and he took the train all the way from Boston for tonight’s class. “Three and a half hours by train, but totally worth it,” he says. As Mark enters the space, and begins to roll out his mat on the floor, I confess to Mike that this is my first time at Hot Nude Yoga. He asks me where I was from. “I’m from Switzerland, but my family lives near Detroit now,” I say. Mike tells me that if I was ever looking for a nude yoga studio in Michigan there is one in Ann Arbor. “It’s a small community, so when someone new shows up it is very exciting for everyone.” He travels a lot, and tries to find a nude studio wherever he goes.

As we are speaking, Mike wraps his arms around his leg bringing his knee into his chest. The ceiling fans are on, countering the dry heat that is blasting out of the two space heaters located on opposite sides of the room. Though the air is hot whenever the heater rotates to face our direction, the fans produce a consistent breeze, as they rotate back and fourth. The other men in the class are casually stretching as well—knees into chests, downward dog, reaching for toes, the occasional comment, or question. “I like being naked for my yoga practice,” says Mike, “it makes me feel more grounded, and I am less easily distracted.” With this last word, Mark sits down on his mat, asking all six men in the room to follow suit.

Following Mark’s instructions we move into child’s pose—shins pressing into the floor, thighs stacked on top of calves, and torso resting on thighs, arms extended. Rhythmic breathing to keep the mind focused. Eyes are closed.

I am lying on my mat, stomach down, hands planted into the ground at either side of my chest. Pushing downward, I pull myself into downward dog—hands and feet rooted firmly into the ground, spine extended—my body is an upside-down V. “You’re a tall man Alex”, says Mark. He stands behind me placing his hands on either side of my hips, pulling backwards. My weight shifts into my legs, and Mark’s adjustment elongates my spine. “Use your height, take advantage of it!” He walks around my mat, kneeling in front of me. I raise my head to see what he is doing. “Relax your neck, you need to spread your finger, and really push into the floor beneath you. Really push and extend your spine.” He places his hands on top of mine, applying pressure, grounding me even more firmly into the floorboards. Mark runs his hand along my spine as he stands up, a tingling sensation, and walks back towards the front of the space. The six of us, with Mark leading, come out of downward dog bringing our knees to the floor, and hands to hips. “Bring your arms up above your head, and lean to the right”. I do so, feeling a deep stretch in my side oblique, below my ribs. “The tiny muscles between the ribs are difficult to reach. Feel your ribs growing further apart.” Mark encourages us to sink deeper into the bend. “Imagine a Dallas barbecue—all of the ribs you’d be eating—all of those tiny muscles in between.” He laughs, “I’m sorry if there are any vegetarians in the room.”

.....................................

A public shower in Denmark, and men are naked, showering in the company of other men. No shame; it is okay to be naked as nudity is natural. Aaron is in support of this “natural state”, and is highly critical of the changes that have been occurring in countries such as Denmark, and Sweden. With the onset of Islam, mentions Aaron, in these countries, places that were once carefree, and open when it came to nudity, a sense of shame concerning the human form has begun to develop.

“Because there is very little honor left in American life, there is a certain tendency to destroy masculinity in the American man.”
-Norman Mailer

Aaron refers to Islam as, “one of the detriments of our society”, specifically because of it’s views of modesty in regard to covering of the body. “It’s starting to happen especially in the younger generation [of countries such as Denmark and Sweden]. It’s starting to spread all over the place.” Islam is becoming more common throughout the world, and public showers are beginning to be replaced by their private, shameful, counterparts. This is quite contrasting to the mission statement of Hot Nude Yoga.

When Aaron first opened Hot Nude Yoga, he wanted to establish a community of no shame, and to make nudity a very natural thing. “There’s a lot of shame in men, and Hot Nude Yoga takes away that shame”, he says. “It’s ok to be naked. It’s ok to be naked, and erect. It’s ok to touch each other. It’s ok to be intimate with other men, and it’s not necessarily a sexual thing. This is the premise for the space that we hold.”

But what do non-nude yoga practitioners think the importance of same-sex bonding as a value, and of group nudity? Julie, a resident of Park Slope, Brooklyn says, “Sharing something as basic as a gender similarity creates an understanding on an elemental, physical, and primary level.” She also agrees that, “there is a gender standard where woman are allowed to be more physically expressive with one another than men.”

Essentially, she thinks, this “allowance” boils down to the idea that men are traditionally the sexual aggressors comparatively to women.”

Julie would do anything “that doesn’t compromise her character”, and would definitely give it a try. She does feel, however, that she would be distracted throughout a nude class by thoughts of others viewing her body, and how she measured up. “I see how it could be an incredibly freeing experience…when you finally let all those petty concerns go. But in a society so dominated and irrevocably linked to the glorification of the ideal human form, it’s hard to liberate your mind from such worries.”

............................................

I feel a space between my ribs, an openness that wasn’t present before. My breathing has become rhythmic, four seconds in, four seconds out, although I have stopped counting. I make my way into downward dog, and flow into a lunge, the muscles of my hip pulling, almost straining, and trying to release. I sink deeper into the pose, and hold my breath as the intensity of the stretch increases. “Don’t hold your breath, Alex”, says Mark. “Breath into the pose, sink yourself deeper, and keep yourself relaxed.” He makes his way over to my mat, swinging his arms calmly at his sides as he strolls. “Relax your shoulders.” He stands behind me as I am lunging, placing his hands at the base of my neck on either side. His hands are warm, and slip over the sweat that has gathered all over my body. “Release the tension.” He massages my shoulders, and I forget how to hold tension. The tightness in my shoulders fades, as they sink into correct posture. I am more relaxed than ever, my lunge is sinking deeper. My knee touches the ground, as my hip is releasing further. Mark is still massaging, and I have become erect from the stimulation. I’m aware of my erection, but my eyes are closed, and I am trying not to think about it. My heart begins to race, and my nerves skyrocket at my display of masculinity. I am embarrassed, but trying not to show it. My eyes open, and my eyes dart around to the other yogis in the room—most eyes are closed, and no one has reacted. It is only an erection. There is one man however, who is looking at me, and in response he slowly becomes erect as well. He closes his eyes, and that is all. For one student, an erection “is kind of like a side-effect.” He says, “There is a distinct aspect of touch as a special way to connect [in the Hot Nude Yoga classes], but that’s the sole focus rather than getting off.” In the classes, erections come and go, sometimes often, sometimes never. There is no pressure to have one, and no condemnation if a man does get hard.

We continue through the flow, moving into a lunge on the other side. As I swing my leg out in front—thigh parallel with the ground, foot firmly planted—I feel the unevenness in my hips: one is loose, the other quite tight. They begin to even out as I sink deeply into the “other” side. “A lot of emotion is stored in the hips”, says Mark. “When this part of the body is released these stored feelings can arise. Just be aware of it, and let it pass.”

The class progresses, continuous flows, adjustments facilitated by Mark. We make our way into sitting, and Mark asks each of us to find a partner. Mike had told me earlier that partnering was an option in the classes. “I’d like to say that I pick blindly, but that would be a total lie”, said Mike in conversation after class. He “tends to go more for people whom [he] finds attractive.” An undistinguishable feature for him is how the other parts of his prospective partner’s practice have gone.” He keeps an eye out during class in order to determine if partnering with someone will be mutually beneficial. When Mike attended his first class, he chose not to partner at all. He was uncomfortable with the idea, but did decide to try out partner yoga at his following class.

.......................................

“Partner yoga is a way to deepen your practice both spiritually, physically, and mentally. Everything just becomes amplified when you’re with a partner,” says Aaron. “Your breathing becomes amplified, your energy becomes amplified, and your posture can deepen. Partner yoga can amplify everything if it is done correctly, and properly.” The partnering experience at Hot Nude Yoga can vary from person to person however. For most it depends on who they are paired with. If the respective partner is someone attractive, in the opinion of the yogi of course, the practice can have more of an erotic, sensual feel. A deep connection can be felt if both yogis are benefiting from the experience. If the partner is not found to be attractive, the experience is often used to deepen further into one’s own personal experience—the stretch, the concentration, and self-awareness, while still being a good partner. If there is an attraction however, energy really begins to rise, and a trust, and companionship can be formed. It is about connection, but two people paired together may not necessarily feel this between each other. Mike says that no matter who he is partnered with, he “makes it a good experience for both, and respects his partner’s practice.”

.........................................

Touch is a form of communication. I immediately look towards Mike, and he raises his eyebrows, and smiles in a friendly manner. “What do you think?” he asks. “Don’t be nervous, it’s completely up to you.” Even the idea of partnering with another nude yogi is causing my knees to shake. I wonder, what am I actually agreeing to?

We agree to use my mat, and Mike makes himself comfortable sitting across from me, legs crossed. We are staring into each other’s eyes, and I am shaking. Mike puts a hand on my knee, “It’s alright, don’t be nervous”. Everyone in the class has a partner, and Mark is left to instruct us through this sequence of the class, the intricate descriptions begin. “So, first decide who will go first.” I look at Mike, and gesture that I will take the lead, for what, I do not know. “Ok, so whoever has decided to go first, stand up, and the partner on the ground lay down in Savasana—arms and legs relaxed, out to the sides.” Mark continued with descriptions of what to do, and I followed. As Mike lay on his mat I picked up his left leg, and pushed it into a ninety-degree angle with the ground, my body resting against his hamstring, calf, resting my forearms on the arches of his feet. I lean forward until he tells me to stop. I am unsure of where to look. Should we hold eye contact? Is this the more “sensual” thing to do? Is it weird if my penis is touching the back of his leg? What is weird about it though, it’s all the same skin, right? My thoughts begin to wander, and I can’t help but to fantasize where the poses could go. This naturally results in an erection. I am standing above Mike, and he is gazing upwards. I feel surprisingly comfortable as we hold the pose for a few minutes. I feel his muscles loosen, and he closes his eyes, and focuses on his breathing. The poses continue in this manner—using the weight of the partner to push stretches further, going beyond what could be accomplished in an individual practice.

...............................................

We continue through the partner poses, and once the anxiety of touching another naked man subsides, the experience becomes pure. I can’t say if everyone in the room is feeling the same, but I felt a deep connection with Mike, a connection I believe could not have been reached in any other way, a trust. I feel sexually aroused; yet have no intention of initiating any sexual action. The focus of the class is on the connection, an exploration of this sexual energy. The two of us have shared the purest aspects of our bodies with each other, and both became slightly aroused, though just noticed the sensations and let them pass. The poses brought up energy, a specific kind of energy. Aaron does not like to use the word sexual when referring to the energy that is raised in a yoga class because the classes, which his studio teaches, do not involve sexual intercourse. This tends to be the assumption that people make. In yoga, “energy is energy”, says Aaron. “It doesn’t matter if it’s sexual, creative, or physical. There’s no differentiation with sexual energy and the energy it takes to build a house. The definition of a yogi is one whose spine is filled with light, or filled with energy. What is this energy? It’s primal sexual energy. But you can’t really say that because people really have no understanding [of energy in the body]. They’re thinking is too small, and they’re thinking is perverted. People think they have to have sex, and this is completely the wrong idea.”

A friend of Aaron’s took a yoga teacher training course, and was shocked when her instructor used the word “sensual” to describe the practice. “Are you kidding me?” says Aaron. “We have become so sanitized that we can’t use the word sensual? We’re sensual beings!” According to Aaron, the energy that all yoga teachers are concerned with raising in a class is “raw, sexual energy”. This does not mean sex, however, maybe passion, heat, “the fire inside”. It is really all the same thing.

In some ways the marketing of Hot Nude Yoga does scream sex. The website is adorned with full nudity, and Aaron sells DVD’s of his classes with titles such as “Afternoon Delight”, and “Tantric Erotic Flow”. In this sense, a purely sexual experience may be what draws some people to the classes rather than the opportunity for a “raw” spiritual practice. It really depends on the individual, and what he is ultimately looking for. Aaron finds that the studio attracts a diverse group of men, yet they all hold “a similar thread”. He says, “There’s something that’s very similar about most people that come”, yet he cannot quite put a finger on what this similar aspect actually is.

.....................................................

The last partner pose is restful—no intense stretches, no bending. Mike and I are back-to-back, sitting on my mat. Our spines are aligned, and I can feel my partner’s rib cage expanding as he deeply inhales. Legs are crossed, hands palm up on knees. We take a few deep breaths together, in and out, in and

Naked yoga may sound more porno-hot than couple-friendly to you and your hunk. Classes do, after all, feature you stretching unclothed among undressed, flexible studs. However, naked yoga emphasizes practice, spirit and self-esteem over horny, hung hotties. In other words, more downward-facing dog than going down.

“Different people enjoy different naked yoga aspects, from exuberant physicality to risk-taking to freedom,” says Aaron Star, founder of the international men’s-only Hot Nude Yoga movement. “However, the most powerful part is the mind-body-spirit connection it creates, especially in relation to the direct energetic and sensual touch of partner yoga.”
Naked yoga can allow you and your suitor to connect on a higher plane where your nudity can prevent you from hiding, literally and metaphorically, by emphasizing your openness, physicality and spirituality. And if you two can’t ignore the scenery, you’ll realize a monogamous commitment may not be in the cards.
Naturally, hygienic matters can affect naked yoga. You and your man should shower and avoid cologne to minimize olfactory distractions. Baring all alongside other men can trigger negative high school locker-room memories like an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog, but naked yoga focuses on peace and positions instead of penises and posteriors, so just find your inner peace about showing off your piece.
Similarly, don’t worry if your “packages” become “special deliveries.” Erections are considered natural in naked yoga classes. They’re also incredibly, um, hard to sustain in most positions, which hopefully isn’t true for you guys in the bedroom. And realize that every naked yoga class has its own flavor. So thoroughly explore where to drop trou to find what works best for you both—a good general rule.

As social creatures, humans benefit from turning our sociability to higher ends. The Buddha, after all, did make the sangha, the spiritual community, one of the three cornerstones of his path; and Christ told his disciples, "When two or more are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them." As these words imply, a group practicing together creates a mystical field, a field of grace. The Sanskrit name for that phenomenon is satsang, usually translated as "truth-company," or being in the company of the wise. And satsang, according to several texts of yoga, is one of the great doorways to inner freedom. As is the case with meditation and asana, the more you practice satsang, the more likely you are to experience its power—and you don't have to join an existing community in order to do this. Some of the most powerful satsangs are the ones we create informally.

An informal satsang group should be small—five to seven is a good number, and you can easily form one with three, two, or even just one other person. All it takes is (1) a decision to have a spiritual dialogue; (2) some sublime and true words to spark your insight; and (3) a shared agreement on the ground

Hot Nude Yoga: shedding clothes to shed pounds

by The Associated Press

04.06.2010 2:49pm EDT

(New York)

Some people work out to look good naked. Others skip a step.

Inside a heavily curtained fourth-floor dance studio is a male-only class specializing in "Hot Nude Yoga," a form of sensualized tantric yoga practiced nude.

A few classes are coed, but male-only gatherings tend to be more popular and have become a mini-phenomenon in the gay community, with studios in Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. A studioless group in Chicago practices in the apartment of a nude yoga enthusiast.

Fans say the nudity aids in deepening their yoga practice while building a close – and emphatically nonsexual – community. "A lot of people, especially living in New York, don't get the opportunity to connect with people in an intimate way," said Aaron Star, who started the naked yoga movement.

And while participants do occasionally report a frisson of excitement, Star and the practice's aficionados make one thing clear: This is about physical fitness.

"This is about yoga and appreciating your body," said John Cottrell, 40, who teaches naked yoga classes in Salt Lake City twice a month. He calls them a safe, nonthreatening space "to help men especially look at themselves in a different way.

"It's just fun. It's a great workout," he says.

Star began the practice to appeal to a primarily gay male audience and achieved fame in the yoga world with his DVD series "Hot Nude Yoga," which allows aspiring yogis to practice in the privacy of their homes.

Hot, yes – in temperature, for starters.

Awkward? That, too.

At the small class I attended, an undeniable sexual charge hung in the room, making the exercise at times painfully weird and embarrassing. Many nude yoga classes revolve around partnering positions, a series of postures that put two men within striking distance of the other's privates.

Not all serious yogis think the practice makes sense.

"I don't see the point," said Mary Dillion, who teaches clothed yoga in Manhattan. "I have a yoga practice that I like and I can be naked in my home. I don't need to do naked yoga."

And Joshua Stein, editor-at-large for OUT Magazine, who attended a class in 2008, says the quality of the yoga was diminished by the heightened sensuality.

"It's almost if the yoga is something between an afterthought and an excuse," said Stein, who is heterosexual. "It gives you this gray area where you can be intimate physically, but not so aggressively intimate as in a bath house or in a bar."

He describes being asked to do a child's pose – a kneeling pose with arms stretched forward on the ground – while a partner draped himself on his back. "It's not something you really need a partner to do," he said.

Star acknowledges that partner work is a popular feature of Hot Nude Yoga that "generates a certain amount of heat" and keeps his client list high. Still, practitioners say they constantly combat the notion that their classes are orgies veiled as exercise.

At Nude Yoga NYC in Manhattan, nude yoga isn't such a boys club. Instructor Isis Phoenix, 29, said her coed nude yoga studio attracts "a well-rounded population of ages, genders and sexual orientations." The men usually outnumber women two-to-one, however.

Phoenix sees nudity as an extra pull for men, who often need an incentive to practice yoga. Still, she nixed the idea that nudity created a sexual element, but one of comfort.

"Men more often fall into a general greater ease with their bodies than women do," she said.

But the trend seems to appeal mostly to gay men. David Flewelling teaches Mudraforce Yoga at a home studio in Montreal, Canada. As at Star and Cottrell's studios, the majority of attendees at Mudraforce are gay.

Flewelling said sex is never part of the experience. Nude yoga, while extremely sensual, is not sexual, he said.

"There's something fantastic about exercising without clothes," he said. "You're free of the restrictions that clothes put on and it puts everyone on even keel."

Even teachers of naked yoga, while railing against the suggestion that the class is tantamount for foreplay, can send mixed signals. When my class ended, I took aside the instructor, Jeffrey Duval, and asked how he got into naked yoga. Duval acknowledged he attended his first class because he thought it was about sex.

But his experience surpassed all his expectations.

"You're shedding away your clothes, but you're also shedding away insecurities and fear," he said. "I can't think of a more perfect way to practice."

As with body weight and good habits, the road to enlightenment isn't a checklist but a treadmill. There's no relaxing, there's no extended vacations. Sticking with my practice, I've discovered, requires constant re-dedication. If I indulge myself in too many days of rest (where rest turns to laziness), I start drifting back.

It isn't only with the actual dedication to practice that I find benefits waning. I find that often, as I go through the motions, I sometimes forget those pearls of insight that seemed to open my horizons not so long ago. The dedication to practice, physical and mental, leads to a constant re-centering. Getting closer to the core in the swirling dance of life that really never stops.

Just a thought as I feel time slipping by...

Blue Osa in the press

20 minutes along, worried we’d lost our way, we came upon a nameless resort sign and pulled in to see if we’d arrived. Where we had arrived was Blue Osa, a brand spanking new ocean-side yoga and spa retreat run by a couple of guys who’ve exchanged New York for paradise. The manager, Stephen (himself a cheerful Canadian expat), and the friendly resident dog greeted us and were happy to take us on a tour. (Sure, we were in a hurry, but this place is beautiful.)

Blue Osa’s small, open property has an ocean-view yoga room, Moroccan lamps and tile, clever buildings made from blue-painted shipping containers, and a long, languid swimming pool; it seems perfect for groups of couple-friends, or even a wedding party, and we’d happily be part of that group.

Dear Aaron,
I watched the dvds and I loved them. You seem to be a very lovable person, determined and you have a flexible body. I hope to be with you one day.
I practice tantra yoga for years (although I am not so flexible) and I am doing a qualifying course in São Paulo to become yoga teacher.
I will add your vinyasa in my daily practice. The partner yoga is great.

Finding Contentment

Yoga is much more than a physical practice. It is also a philosophy about the way we should live. According to yogic philosophy, we cause ourselves pain by desiring things we don't have, but think that we need. In other words, we hurt ourselves by yearning after what's out of reach.

Samtosa is a niyama, or guiding principle of yoga. This principle encourages us to develop contentment. It prescribes the merit of striving to be grateful for what we have rather than yearning for new and different things. The word "samtosa" is also sometimes translated as happiness, because, by finding contentment with what we have, we also find joy, relaxation, and peace.

You can practice Samtosa in all aspects of your life-toward your family, friends, and your career.

Your Morning Practice

If that morning mantra "rise and shine" strikes you as the ultimate oxymoron, you might have something to gain from Ayurveda's approach to waking up. According to Ayurvedic philosophy, choices that you make regarding your daily routine either build up resistance to disease or tear it down. Ayurveda calls for getting a jump-start on the day by focusing on morning rituals that work to align the body with nature's rhythms, balance the doshas, and also foster self-esteem alongside self-discipline. Adopting just one or more of the following practices for a month can radically alter your experience of the day. Don't be surprised if you begin to view mornings in a new light.

  • Roll out of bed at least 20 minutes before sunrise.
  • Drink a glass of lukewarm water flavored with a fresh slice of lemon or lime.
  • Rinse your face upon waking.
  • Lightly splash cool water into your opened eyes to help balance the doshas.
  • Scrape your tongue. Use seven to 14 strokes to cover the entire area. This not only rids the tongue of ama, but also unearths the taste buds, awakening the gastric fire for another day of savoring food.

Clearing the Haze - The Meaning and Purpose

Many Yoga students come to yoga for several reasons. One of the reasons is to build a stronger body, and for some, myself included, to build a happier and healthy yoga butt. Yogis around the world are well known for there happy healthy yoga butts.

One of the poses that helps the most is Virabhadrasana II, aka Warrior II (2)

Practicing Warrior 2 will strengthened both legs. Warrior 2 can also help the knee muscles strengthen. The shoulders are stretched and the arms are strengthened. The muscles needed to raise the arms up are the deltoids the supraspinatus, infrasinatus. pectoralis major and the biceps. This yoga posture will also increase groin flexibility.

Warrior 2 is also a weight baring pose, thus this pose will help to improve your bone density.

How to do Warrior 2

Step the legs apart. Turn one leg out and bend the knee. Remain aligned vertically with the spine or allow a slight tilt forward towards the bent leg. Expand the arms out stretching them sideways. The fingers can by closed or open. (One creates a direct force and the other is a flared force.)

Align the tailbone and the top of the head vertically. If you lean slightly forward with the spine more force can be driven forward. Less strain is present on the inner leg that is straightened. You may prefer the energy this modification brings.

Muscles involved in the external hip rotation in the back leg are the quadratus femoris, gemellus Superior and inferior, obturator internus and externus and the piriformis. Muscles in the inner leg that are usually involved with adduction act against the yoga posture if they are not flexible and as a result are stretched. These are the pectineus, adductor longus, brevis and magnus and the gracilis. These muscles affect both legs and will create an inward force towards the midline.

Tell the truth

Posted by: yogistar in Deepen your practice on

yogistar
Satya, or truth, is the second yama. But telling the truth may not be as easy as it sounds. Researchers have found that eyewitnesses to an event are notoriously unreliable. The more adamant the witnesses are, the more inaccurate they tend to be. Even trained scientists, whose job it is to be completely objective, disagree on what they see and on the interpretation of their results.

So what does telling the truth mean? To many yogis, it means speaking with the intention of being truthful, given that what one calls the "truth" is filtered through one's own experience and beliefs about the world. But when we speak with that intention, we have a better chance of not harming others.

Another aspect of satya has to do with inner truth or integrity, a deeper and more internal practice. Honesty is what we do when others are around and might judge our actions or words, but to have integrity is to act in an honest manner when others are not around and will never know about our actions.

In Sanskrit, sat means the eternal, unchanging truth beyond all knowing; ya is the activating suffix that means "do it." So satya means "actively expressing and being in harmony with the ultimate truth." In this state, we cannot lie or act untruthfully, because we are unified with pure truth itself.

LA Stepping Forward
What an exciting and wild adventure it’s been to bring Naked Yoga LA and Hot Naked Yoga - LA together. Meeting and practicing with so many wonderful and dedicated yogis in LA has been a wonderful experience for me.

I can honestly say that after leading the Hot Naked Yoga New York since 2001 and leading almost 100 retreats and workshops around the world did little to prepare me to meet the many challenges I faced in LA. I am still not sure why that is, but it has been so.
The power of words isn't lost on anyone—just think of the pleasure you feel when someone pays you a sincere compliment, or the discomfort of realizing you've spilled a secret you'd promised to keep. Words and the energy they carry make or break friendships and careers; they define us as individuals and even as cultures. We know this, and yet we often let our words flow out more or less unmediated, like random pebbles tossed into a lake. Sometimes, it's only when the ripples spread and cause waves, and the waves rush back and splash us, that we stop to think about the way we speak.

The sages of yoga obviously understood the human tendency to run off at the mouth, because many texts of the inner life, from the Upanishads and the Yoga Vasistha to the Bhagavad Gita, counsel us to use words carefully. The Buddha made right speech one of the pillars of his Noble Eightfold Path. On the simplest level, these sages point out, unnecessary speaking wastes energy that could be devoted to self-inquiry and transformative action. More important, though, is the power that words have to change the communal atmosphere, to cause joy or pain, and to create a climate that fosters truth or falsity, kindness or cruelty.

Things have been a little funky in my body of late and in a decision to get back on track, I've been seeing a holistic kinesiology (think psychologist meets healer meets naturopath) and have altered my diet to be kinder on my system. So far, it's been quite a journey.

While cutting wheat, dairy and red meat from my diet seemed initially to be the biggest challenge, the changes in my emotional body have been more trying and unexpected than anything else. Cleansing the system has led me into a few bouts of sickness - purging goes all ways. It has also just brought fluctuations in moods. Nausea wasn't uncommon, as was a sense of imbalance at my third chakra (a center of power, self-esteem, and life balance).

Greatest were big moments of frustration. Issues of trust with friends and lovers, bitterness at lack of motivation, and sometimes helplessness at the passive way I take the wheel of my life. It has been a challenge. Fighting through these moments of frustration (sometimes letting them flail their unwieldy arms), have led to moments of peace.

The process has also involved the adoption of a mantra of sorts, a personal statement: "I take responsibility for my attitudes and now choose to trascend and dissolve my trying hard to control and my anxiety from deep inside into all-encompassing love. I make the commitment to kindly, gently, lovingly and supportively feel in touch with a deep sense of purpose, stay focused on what is most essential and joyfully surrender my personal will to a higher power."

What I find most challenging is the idea of joyful surrender. Along with embodying kindness, gentleness, love and support in an effort to dissolve current negative hangups. Big hurdles of personal and universal trust and allowance. Repeating the words every day, their meaning starts to shift, their weight hits deeper to my core and, slowly, I embody and comprehend their  message.

Still in the middle of it, I know that my awareness of self has only grown and that such presence is a gift I must continue to nurture as I move forward through difficult times.

 Thus the  journey

While reading the NYTimes today, I came upon an interesting article in the 'Weekend Arts' in which Michiko Kakutani reviews Stefani Syman's book The Subtle Body: The Story of Yoga in America.

"But while Ms. Syman has amassed a lot of entertaining anecdotes about the history of yoga in this country, her overall narrative suffers from odd gaps and elisions.  She fails to give the lay reader a real appreciation of yoga's ancient history and the evolution of various practices and schools.  And the final chapters feel truncated and rushed; they do not even seem to draw usefully on a plethora of recent newspaper, magazine and radio reports about the latest permutations of the yoga boom in America.

What Ms. Syman does do deftly is trace how the likes of Emerson (with his interest in Indian thought) and Thoreau (with his practice of meditation) helped create a context in which an Amercian yoga could take root. And she provides a lively gallery of larger-than-life characters who would contribute to (or undermine, or co-opt) the progress of yoga in the United States - beginning with Swani Vivikananda, who came to America in 1893 to raise money for the poor in India, and who drew large audiences at the World Parliment of Religions, convened as part of the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago."

Sounds like a book that is taking a good look at the roots of the tree rather than the branches, no?   And as someone interested in history, I find this interesting.

Chakra

Chakra is a concept referring to wheel-like vortices which, according to traditional Indian medicine, are believed to exist in the surface of the etheric double of man.  The Chakras are said to be "force centers" or whorls of energy permeating, from a point on the physical body, the layers of the subtle bodies in an ever-increasing fan-shaped formation (the fans make the shape of a love heart). Rotating vortices of subtle matter, they are considered the focal points for the reception and transmission of energies. Seven major chakras or energy centers (also understood as wheels of light) are generally believed to exist, located within the subtle body. Practitioners of Hinduism and New Age Spirituality believe the chakras interact with the body's ductless endocrine glands and lymphatic system by feeding in good bio-energies and disposing of unwanted bio-energies.

It is typical for chakras to be depicted in two ways:

  • 1. flower-like
  • 2. wheel-like

In 1. a specific number of petals are shown around the perimeter of a circle,

In 2. a certain number of spokes divide the circle into segments that make the chakra resemble a wheel or "chakra." Each chakra possesses a specific number of segments or "petals."

Much of the original information on Chakras comes from the "Upanishads", which are difficult to date because they are believed to have been passed down orally for approximately a thousand years before being written down for the first time between 1200–900

In an ideal world every asana would feel restorative. But those that fall into the special category of restorative poses have a particular ability to leave us nourished and well rested. These postures are usually deeply supported by blankets, blocks, or other props and are held for several minutes at a time.

Restorative practice can be intimidating to beginners—all those props! But just a few guiding tips will help you start a regular restorative practice of your own.

Start out with a few minutes of gentle movement before settling into a restorative pose or practice. A little stretching will warm the muscles and create space in the body to prepare it for relaxation. Movement will also give your body a chance to shed its restlessness and busy-ness before settling into a place of stillness.

Don't skimp on the props. Blocks, straps, blankets, balls, towels, chairs, walls, sandbags, eye bags, and pillows are all considered fair game when supporting yourself in these poses. The more fully your body is supported, the deeper your sense of relaxation and surrender will be. So go ahead: Raid the linen closet—your body will thank you with profound sighs of

Great Article in the NY Times

There is so much going on in John Friend’s life right now that an assistant once teased him about waking just before dawn and calling to ask for coffee, only to be reminded that he, Friend, was in Quito, Munich or Seoul, while the assistant was back at home base in the Woodlands, a cushy suburb north of Houston. That Friend, the founder of Anusara, one of the world’s fastest-growing styles of yoga, has an assistant is itself significant; many people still picture yogis as serene guys who live in respectable deprivation in places like Mysore or Pune, India, and wait for disciples to find them. Not Friend.

Consider one afternoon in early June when he had just left a meeting with potential investors in Seattle, having flown to the West Coast after several months of giving Anusara workshops in Tokyo, Taipei, Bali and Morrisville, N.C., and was making a brief stopover in the Woodlands on his way to teach more workshops in Copenhagen, Munich, Paris and Park City, Utah — stops on his “Melt Your Heart, Blow Your Mind Tour.” Friend’s modest, two-story faux Tudor home (filled with statues of Hindu gods, prayer flags and other souvenirs of his myriad travels) was a semimaelstrom of recently washed clothes, piled-up mail and stacks of unread publications with headlines like “Nine Life-Altering Lessons” — a reflection of the semimaelstrom that is his life.

When Friend wasn’t off leading workshops, he was helping plan the yoga-and-music Wanderlust festival to be held this week in Squaw Valley and the Anusara Grand Gathering in Estes Park, Colo., in September, the lead-in to Yoga Journal’s annual weeklong conference featuring major American yoga teachers. “John brings in huge numbers,” says Elana Maggal, conference director for Yoga Journal, the bible for practitioners. “In 2008, his was the largest yoga class ever held at our conference. We had 800 people all in one room. We had a waiting list of 200. Needless to say, we want to replicate that.”

On the road and at home, Friend also keeps tabs on all the ancillary businesses he has created in the last 13 years, since Anusara was born: his global Anusara expansion (Studio Yoggy, one of the biggest yoga-school chains in Japan, will be offering Anusara yoga classes); his Anusara publishing ventures (he has commissioned a history of yoga and continues to work on his own book, albeit sporadically); and his Anusara yoga-wear business (Friend has his own line, but also works with Adidas, which is using Anusara yoga trainers in its worldwide yoga push). He is also financing historical yoga research in Nepal and Kashmir.

Simultaneously, Friend is trying to raise money for his most ambitious project to date, the Center, which he is planning to locate in meta-crunchy Encinitas, Calif. Friend expects the Center, with art, music and theater, in addition to yoga, to expand the Anusara “community” — his word — which currently includes 200,000 students in 70 countries and about 1,200 licensed-by-John-Friend teachers. In his downtime, Friend regularly sends Twitter messages to his 5,000 followers and to his 8,000 Facebook fans. But there is always more to do: during the 36 hours he spent at home, he taped his portion of a DVD titled “Titans of Yoga,” in which he will appear with other American yogis like Shiva Rea and David Swenson. (“Namaste,” he said, relaxed before the camera in a white linen shirt and khakis. “I’m John Friend, the founder of Anusara yoga. I’ve been practicing for 40 years. . . . Yoga is my life. It’s not just something I practice on a sticky mat.”)

Do I need to have any other qualifications to be accepted into the program? What qualifications do I need to teach yoga?

To qualify for one of our Teacher Training Programs, you must complete an application, and have the desire for at least one of goals mentioned above.

The truth is that you do not need any qualifications to teach yoga yet, at least in the United States, Canada, and many other countries around the world. And, even if you have many qualifications, unless you are a very renowned teacher who offers something very unique, chances are that most yoga studios will still require you to do some sort of training at their studio. There are two primary reasons. Teacher Trainings are where most studios make their money, and the other reason is maintain some uniformity within the teachings their teachers offer.

Do I need to do the Hot Nude Yoga Training to teach at Hot Nude Yoga?

The answer in short is yes. Many people who teach often think that teaching at Hot Nude Yoga is an easy transition, and it is not. There are many attributes that go into a Hot Nude Yoga class. In addition to these attributes is the knowledge of Tantra, Asana, Vinyasa Krama, Prana Yama, and partner Yoga.

But I am already a teacher and have been teaching for a long time. Can I at least get a discount?

Yes we do have a auditors discount. If you feel that you fall into this category, please let us know in your registration. (The auditors discount only applies if you are taking the training in New York. It DOES NOT apply when we offer this training abroad.

I have already done this yoga training, should I do this training again?

In my experience, most people need to take something at least seven times before the really hear it, and hear something about a dozen times before they put it into action. Personally, I have taken some of the same trainings with my teachers many times, and years later, I still get much out of it and enhance my own skills.

In yoga, or any spiritual tradition, the importance of reconnecting with a teacher is always important.

Do you offer scholarships or work-exchange programs?

Occasionally we do offer work exchanges.  However, we feel that our program is very affordable compared to other trainings offered out there.

If you feel that you need a discount or would like to do some work exchange for this training, please contact us.  Please provide all information about yourself, what your situation is and why you feel you would need some assistance and we will see what we can do.

New Mexico was my first HNY retreat.  Deciding to go was a big decision for me.  I had not traveled anywhere alone in years, I had come off a year that handed me challenges one after another, and I was weary.  In the center of this, I anticipated a milestone birthday which traditionally is a benchmark for where you have been and where you are going.  This raised questions about love, career, identity, old demons, relationships, etc.  So I decided to pack all of this in a bag and bring it to New Mexico, where they say the mountains lift you higher than yourself.

I rented a car as soon as I landed and began my trek to Jemez Springs.  I was already taken by the vastness of the mountains.  Every corner I made on the way there revealed another majestic image of nature and I was humbled by it's grandiosity and filled by it's spiritual power.  I can't believe I have lived all these years in this country and have never known the majesty of this place.  Growing up in urban settings I could never have imagined a place with such space and stature.  The aesthetics, however, were only the first of many miracles I would experience.

I didn't know most of the people at the retreat.  Those I did know I had not spent much time with so I was looking forward to this aspect of the weekend.  I would love to be able to find the words to describe how these people impacted my life for 5 days but the language of words and sentences limits the expression of this sentiment.  There was a new language there among us, in the valleys of Jemenez Springs, where tears, embraces, smiles, laughter, music and movement created a dialogue that was limitless in it's ability to express the mighty power of unconditional love and fellowship.

I write this and I am welling up again because 3 days later and 3000 miles away, my heart is still there on the back porch of my cabin looking out at my new friends in the hot springs with the awesomeness of mother nature behind them.  I close my eyes and I feel the embraces, the compassion, the acceptance of who I am for everything I am, flaws and all.  I have never felt so accepted, so supported and such permission to relax and be exactly who I am.  In 40 years, no one has ever gotten me to let down my guard and let people in this way.  Here, it was accomplished in 48 hours.  Perhaps that speaks to the instant connection this group had from the very first moments we gathered.

The questions which we were encouraged to explore on the retreat were hard ones for me, but I promised myself I would be as open as possible to letting in some light to the dark places so that I could be "ready to see what my mind wanted to show me", as presented on Saturday.  By Sunday morning the screen was wide and in full color, and the images were haunting and healing, in that order.  It clicked why retreats work so well.  There is nowhere there to hide from yourself.  You don't have to go to the store in an hour, get to work by a certain time, call so and so at a specific hour.  There is the availability of space and time and the absence of escape.  I've always run when the credits began.  I never stuck around for the show before.  I won't say it wasn't painful to go through but the trade off is that I am sitting here now in Boston as though I am standing in front of the rest of my life, with no traps, bumps or obstacles before me.  I can actually see what it is I'd like to find there on the next part of my journey.

If you want to reveal yourself, look to your fears, then celebrate the things that are birthed from those painful places.  I am comforted by, no longer afraid of, what's ahead because I know that suffering which has not yet happened CAN be avoided.  We are not doomed to repeat mistakes or to experience unwanted pain.  This year, my mind has been the warden to my prison and now it is indeed the key to my freedom.  When your mind is freed, so is your body.  I am now doing poses I couldn't do before.  You do the math.

It is difficult to be back home, away from that space of light, positive energy and kindred spirits.  I am working on, but haven't quite mastered, the skill of internalization of things that I have to let go of physically, but part of my practice is to strengthen that skill.  It is indeed a challenge to remain steadfast with a new perspective/positioning when no one around you is anything like the people you have just come from.  But on days when I move a little slower down my newly paved road, I know I have 30 streams of light which I am connected to around this vast expanse of land we inhabit.  I do believe my friends are right here with me and I hope they feel me as much as I feel them.

Thank you to my new brothers for a truly life changing weekend.

GO ON A RETREAT!!!

Namaste,

Patrick Lillis
